In memory of the feast of St John the Baptist, on 24th June every year, young men from all over Goa celebrates Sao Jao popularly known as the monsoon festival. St John The Baptist, the prophet saint who, is believed to have proclaimed the coming of Jesus into this world according to Christianity is said to have been overjoyed with the news and thus the celebration of Sao Jao ( in Portuguese which means St. John ). The celebration is thus a joy over the prosperity that monsoon adds to the villages and it is also considered an offering or prayer for fertility.
