Traditional Cast-net fishing
One among the traditional fishing methods nearing extinction in India
For this young man engaged in fishing, other jobs like construction works and marble drilling are the natural options left and fishing may evolve just as a hobby in future.
Fish and fishing near extinction
Preference of deep water trawlers over traditional methods of fishing certainly guarantees value for money but how long is the question. The presence of shark, catfish, sardine, pomfret, mackerel, seer fish, tuna, prawns and crabs near Vypin area have decereased considerably says the local fishermen.
There is a massive cultural shift happening across all the coastal areas. If the change in job preference can be attached to deep water trawlers dominating the marine industry, the declining marine resources in Vypin and its extended sea waters can be directly related to the sub-sea pipeline project undertaken by GAIL (India) Limited, a government of India undertaking under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
